A WOMAN from Chester has been jailed for violently assaulting her husband for years, which left him fearing he would eventually be killed.
Cara Smith, of Dog Lane, Kelsall, Chester, appeared at Mold Crown Court today, Tuesday, July 29, after admitting to controlling and coercive behaviour.
The 47-year-old was also sentenced for two charges of assault causing bodily harm in August last year and February this year in Flintshire.
Despite a loving start to the relationship, the victim claimed his wife's behaviour and mood changed drastically in 2018.
Alcohol was a contributing factor, and the defendant would spend over £500 a month on wine which she took to bed with her.
Laura Knightly, prosecuting, told the court that there had been a catalogue of assaults, with photographs and videos of multiple incidents.
These involved biting, kicking and punching, resulting in bruises and cuts left all over his body. One image showed his face covered in soil from a house plant.
During the night, Smith would dig her arms and legs into her husband's back, even after he received extensive spinal surgery. He was left extremely sleep deprived.
When high tensions arose, Smith frequently told him to f*** o**, and repeatedly called him a c***and t***, the court heard. She also took his phone from him.
He became isolated from his friends and family who noticed the changes in his behaviour, alongside his work colleagues.
An incident was reported in August 2024 in which Smith used a cigarette to burn her husband's chest. He also sustained bruising to his arms.
In February this year, a second incident occurred whereby Smith threw a fireplace companion set across the room. It hit her partner in the head and the police were called.
Upon their arrival, the victim 'broke down' in tears and said "I will end up dead."
When the defendant was released on bail, she called her partner repeatedly and threatened to harm herself. When she was presented with divorce papers, she tore them up.
A video was sent to the victim's sister-in-law which revealed Smith attempting to break into their spare bedroom which was used as a 'panic room' by the victim.
He said he had been 'left physically, emotionally and financially exhausted' by what had happened.

Elan Owen, defending, said her client had faced agony when the couple failed to fall pregnant early on in their relationship.
"This is a very sad case", she said. "To have gone from a loving relationship to the point where we are today."
She explained Smith had experienced anxiety and depression throughout their relationship which had become toxic.
Recorder Anna Price said only an immediate custodial sentence would be appropriate following the abuse.
Smith was sentenced to 27 months, with at least half to be served on licence. She has already served a total of 127 days, which will count towards the sentence.
A 10-year restraining order from contacting the victim was also made.
