TRIBUTES have been paid to a much-loved former police dog who died last week.
PD Rufus joined the Cheshire and North Wales Police Dogs Unit back in 2015, working alongside his handler PC Neil Jukes.
He went on to spend seven years with the team before hanging up the lead for good in 2022.
During his time with the unit, Rufus helped officers track down plenty of drugs across the area as part of his scanning and rummaging duties.
Announcing the news that the lovable Spaniel had passed away on March 13, the Cheshire and North Wales Police Dogs Unit said: "With great sadness one of our retired police dogs Rufus passed over the rainbow bridge last night.
"Rufus came to us in 2015 with his Handler PC Neil Jukes and from the start it was clear he was a real character."

They added: "He licensed as a scanning and rummage drugs dog. His love was scanning and could often be seen in town centre pubs and public venues throughout Cheshire and North Wales were he had exceptional results and excelled in everything he did.
"He retired with his handler in 2022 after seven years service just before his ninth birthday. He had a lovely retirement and was spoilt rotten, regularly enjoying days out with his family. He will never be forgotten and will be sadly missed. RIP Rufus."
Others took the time to pay tribute underneath the police unit's post.
Jeff Mather said: "He was an amazing dog, one of Cheshire's best drugs dogs. It was always a pleasure working alongside side you both in the schools and colleges where the students loved him and he stole the show."
Barbara Couch said: "Thank you Rufus for working so hard to protect people you didn't even know, you're a hero. Play hard and happy now in the gardens beyond."
Yvonne Daulby added: "You did a good job Rufus, so happy you enjoyed your retirement. RIP."
