Almost 3,000 motorists caught exceeding 20mph in north Wales

ALMOST 3,000 motorists got caught speeding on 20mph roads in North Wales in January. 

Figures issued by GoSafe revealed that 2,966 motorists were caught exceeding the controversial speed limit on North Wales roads last month, a decrease of 679 from December.

The average offence speed was 28.5mph, with the highest recorded being 89mph. 

Across South and Mid Wales, a total of 5,915 motorists were caught speeding - at an average speed of 28.1mph. 

The number of motorists caught speeding across Wales has reduced significantly in recent months.

In March 2024, there were just eight motorists caught exceeding the limit in North Wales, which grew to 251 in April, 636 in May, 892 in June, 5,199 in July, 7,958 in August, 6,667 in September, 6,354 in October, 5,070 in November, and 3,675 in December. 

In total, 39,706 motorists have been caught speeding in 20mph areas in the region since March. 

While across Wales as a whole, 94,172 motorists have been caught speeding since November 2023. 

A GoSafe spokesperson said: "It’s worth noting that the number of offences detected is not equal to the amount of people that received fines. The data is only for the number of offences. These offences may conclude in educational courses, points and a fine, court referrals or exemptions.

Both Wrexham and Flintshire County Councils have begun consultations on which roads are likely to be reverted back to 30mph. 

Welsh Government gave local authorities the power to revert roads back, and in the last few weeks, certain roads have been referenced as likely to return to 30mph, following the necessary regulations.
