A CONWY-based choir for people with a learning disability is thrilled to have been awarded vital funding.

The £25,000 from Gwynt Y Mor will support the CC4LD (Conwy Connect for Learning Disabilities) inclusive Sing and Sign choir led by a Makaton tutor.

The choir is a friendly group of music lovers who come together on alternate Mondays at Tape Community Music and Film in Old Colwyn to learn and sign together.

The choir provides a safe space within an inclusive group where comes together to embrace a new skill, enjoy music, and friendships and make meaningful connections.

The choir is always looking for ways to encourage members to try new things and get involved in opportunities within the Conwy community.

Previous years have seen the choir perform at Prom Xtra, conferences, church services, and concerts, all of which raise awareness within the community and also build members' confidence.

On May 11, Conwy Connect planned a trip for members to watch the Connah’s Quay Cobra’s Ice Hockey team play the Shropshire Huskies at Deeside Leisure Centre.

During the half-time of the match, the Sing and Sign choir, along with the Connah’s Quay Cobras, were played on the big screen in the hope of raising more awareness of Makaton and the importance of making communication accessible to everyone.

Catherine Thornton, Conwy Connect CEO and Connah's Quay Cobras player, said: "I'm beyond thrilled about this collaboration between Connah's Quay Cobras and Conwy Connect for Learning Disabilities!

"Our Makaton duet showcased the beauty of communication through music, and it's incredible to demonstrate to others the power of Makaton in our community.

"Teaching people that they can communicate in such a meaningful way is truly inspiring."
