A FLINTSHIRE branch of the Women's Institute has celebrated its centenary.

Penyffordd, Penymynydd and Dobshill WI saw members and past Presidents gather for the milestone event at the War Memorial Institute in Penyffordd.

The evening also included visiting WI groups, guests, past and present members and musicians for the evening, Tim Jones and Lynsey Blair.

To mark the occasion the group have been busy crafting 100 squares to make a quilt, which was displayed on the night.

President Helen Dalrymple welcomed all, as those gathered started the evening with a rousing rendition of Jerusalem, the traditional WI anthem sung at meetings, accompanied by Tim on the keyboard and Lynsey on the saxophone.

They remembered past friends and members and Helen reflected on the past history of the group, which has met now for 100 years in the War Memorial Institute, which last year also celebrated its centenary.

Whilst the time may pass and changes inevitable, WI remains as always and there are many similarities between then and now. A national group with local federations and individual groups, as it's motto says inspiring women is at it heart. It provides a voice and can make a difference.

Wishes and congratulations were extended to the group for their centenary from far and wide.

Helen ended with thoughts from a member shared on one of the group's centenary clouds: "It's (WI) not just jam and Jerusalem. Look round see the crafts, friendship and warmth."

The completed centenary quilt of 100 squares, crafted by members and brought together skilfully by Jane Davies, is proudly displayed in the institute and very much a part of the celebrations.

Members were entertained with music through the decades and faced the challenge of Tim and Lynsey's quiz with lots of laughs, as they tried to recall past and present tunes. Tim and Lynsey were outstanding and made the evening very special for all.

The centenary cake was made by Helen and with spring daisies and WI green candles. Anne Longworth, one of the group's members, had the honour of cutting the cake.

Competition for the evening was 'an object of 100 years' and the entries were both varied and fascinating. They included a beautiful Suffragette brooch, a daffodil telephone, books and many others with the three winners being: Jane Lloyd - a collection of postcards; Maureen Gordon - a decorated box; Margaret van Der Fecht - a collection of silver miniatures
