POLICE officers have been praised for playing their part in raising money for a Wrexham hospice by taking part in a new challenge.

Wrexham’s largest county park, Alyn Waters, welcomed a brand-new event this morning (Saturday, March 30) with runners raising raise money for Nightingale House Hospice by completing a 5k or 10k route in the beautiful woodland.

A spokesman for the Wrexham Rural policing team congratulated officers after completing the event.

"This morning some of our Neighbourhood Policing Team took part in the Nightingale House 5k run in Alyn Waters," the spokesman explained.

"A really enjoyable event for an amazing cause, with officers raising over £350 for the local charity.

"A big well done to all officers that took part in both the 5k and 10k runs."

Speaking prior to the event, Nightingale House events manager Elise Jackson said: “The Alyn Waters 5k and 10k is about making every step count, raising funds and awareness for the care provided by Nightingale House Hospice."

The hospice has previously confirmed it has been looking at other ways to keep its finances afloat during this difficult time.

Most of its running costs are met through fundraising and other channels of income generation that includes its on-site café and retail outlets that make a significant contribution towards maintaining services for those with life-limiting illnesses within palliative care.

The hospice's services are completely free-of-charge to patients and their families across its catchment area stretching from Wrexham, Flintshire and East Denbighshire to Barmouth and the border towns including Oswestry and Whitchurch.

It costs £4,587,434 each year to run Nightingale House Hospice.
