A SOCIAL club in Flintshire is moving ever closer to becoming the first in the UK to become net zero.

Ewloe Social Club is moving closer to achieving the feat thanks to grant funding of £44,920 for the installation of a solar panel array and battery storage system.

The funding from the Parc Adfer Community Benefit Fund should see an impressive 2092 kwH per year of clean green renewable energy, saving over 4000 kg of carbon polluting the atmosphere.

A spokesman for Ewloe Social Club said: “We are truly thankful for the support given to us by the Parc Adfer Community Benefit Fund. This will allow us to continue to operate in a sustainable way and continue to offer our local community important facilities so desperately needed.

"Our founder’s vision of a place for the entire community to benefit from, be that any one of the local or national organisations who regularly use our facilities for a wide range of purposes, is still at the core of our ethos."

Becky Morgan, from Pathway to Net Zero, an advisor to Ewloe Social Club, added: “The club is already making great strides to improve its longer-term sustainability which is a credit to the passion of Paul with the support of his board, staff and members.

"Having been in environmental services for a number of years we were truly impressed with the time, dedication and innovative thinking that Paul has put in to the journey to lead the club to become an exemplar community facility with Low Carbon at the core of its mission statement and the recognition that this will provide a sustainable future for the club, its members, the Ewloe community and its residents.”

The grant funding for the installation of the solar array and battery storage comes a few weeks after the successful completion to the concert room roof replacement, that saw funding from the Prosperous Community Flintshire Key Fund to replace the uninsulated roof of the concert room.

Ewloe Social Club's spokesman told of how the reduction in energy consumption had been significant and how people were commenting on how warm they felt in the room. He continued by thanking the local MP Mark Tami for all the support he has given in writing letters of support and his office staff for being only a phone call away to give assistance when needed.
