A HISTORY-making teacher has claimed the secondary school teacher of the year at the Leader Education Awards.

Christopher Lewis, of Rhosnensi High School in Wrexham scooped the prize at the awards night on March 14 at the Village Hotel, St David’s.

The judges said the award will recognise a secondary teacher who inspires and engages students to fulfill their potential and makes an exceptional contribution to the life of their school.

30-year-old Christopher has been at Rhosnesni for six years, where he teaches maths.

Described as “very passionate”, Christopher ensures all pupils have the best possible chance to better themselves and achieve their potential.

Since being at the school, Christopher has helped achieve history, with 27 out of 29 pupils in one maths class achieving A* and the remaining two receiving an A.

In addition to his education work, Christopher is a proud member of the LBTQ community, regularly promoting this and supporting children who may struggle with their emotions.

He is highly respected and thought after by colleagues and parents of the school as well as the pupils.

Following on from being presented with the award, Christopher said: “This is amazing, to be recognised for doing my day-to-day job.

“I see myself as a bit of a beacon for pupils in the LGBTQ community and hope to help them as much as I can. I’m very open with how I felt during school and if I can help then I will.

“I hope to leave a legacy with my pupils and it is pleasing to see when they go onto study maths at higher education, it makes me very proud.”

Also up for secondary school teacher of the year were Matthew Hobbs of Ysgol Treffynnon, Holywell and Hannah Roberts from Ysgol Maes Garmon, Mold.
