A CANCER support group is celebrating after hitting their £60,000 fundraising total.

The Wrexham Prostate Cancer Support group has been raising funds over the past few years in a bid to purchase cryotherapy treatment for the Maelor Hospital.

The group has held several auctions, golf days, and coffee mornings as they slowly built their way to ticking off the target.

After finally reaching the target, the support group is now waiting for the all-clear for the cryotherapy equipment to be purchased.

The target was reached following a coffee and cake event held by Ted and Karen Capstick, which raised £3,000.

Group secretary Phil Jones said: "We have recently raised £60,000 intending to purchase Cryotherapy and HIFU equipment at Wrexham Maelor Hospital.

"Kind-hearted group member Ted Capstick and his wife Karen have presented us with a cheque for £3,000 following their very successful Coffee and Cake event which also included some very generous donations from their friends.

"Raising money is a very small part of what the support group are about and their number one objective is to raise public awareness and promotion of the cause of prostate cancer, to provide support for those men who have prostate cancer or suspect that they may have symptoms."

After hitting their fundraising goal, the group quickly switched their attention to their next effort.

Phil added: "We are now focused on helping to fund a revolutionary Prostate Cancer testing programme under the leadership of Professor Stephen Hughes and Professor Muir at Aberystwyth.

"It is a collaborative venture with our group and the project’s objective is to have an improved, more accurate and easier method of testing for the presence of prostate cancer.
