A COUNCIL-RUN catering company has apologised after a school ran out of food on its first day back.

Some pupils at Hawarden High School reportedly went without any lunch on Wednesday due to a food shortage in the canteen.

One parent contacted The Leader to say that, as a result, their child only had a bag of sweets all day.

NEWydd Catering, which is in charge of providing school meals in Flintshire, has apologised for the issues.

Steve Jones, managing director at NEWydd Catering & Cleaning, said: “NEWydd Catering & Cleaning Limited would like to apologise to all pupils, and their parents who did not get their desired lunches at Hawarden High School on their first day back at school this Wednesday.

"As your catering provider we acknowledge that this is not acceptable and have put measures in place to ensure there will be no repeat of this in future.

"Our new healthy menu proved to be more popular than we had anticipated, particularly with the new year 7 pupils, combined with a technical issue with our stock ordering system which unfortunately led to some pupils attending towards the end of the lunch break not getting a full meal."

"We work hard to ensure our menus offer the variety and range of dishes our valued customer demand.
