A HAPPY couple from Wrexham are celebrating 60 wonderful years together after travelling to Scotland to elope.

Sixty years ago, Pam and Dean Hammond eloped to Gretna Green in Scotland to lawfully marry.

The pair-in-love were too young to marry in England without the consent of both parents as they were under 21, and so the young couple journeyed to Scotland to tie the knot over the famous anvil in the old Blacksmiths.

There they got married on July, 26, 1963, with Pam being 20-years-old and Dean, 19.

Pam and Dean first met at Margate while on holiday a year prior to getting married.

After their exciting, and perhaps a little daunting start, the couple have now notched 60 years together - and even received their card from the King and Queen to congratulate them.

To mark the special occasion, Pam and Dean from Smithy Lane in Acton, Wrexham celebrated with friends and family at the Gresford Colliery Club.

They decided to raise funds for the Wrexham Shooting Star charity.

Pam, a cancer survivor said: “We have everything we need, so we wanted to give back to the charity that helps people through that difficult time. So asking for donations instead of gifts made perfect sense!”

The chairman of Shooting Star, David Parry personally thanked the couple for raising just over £500.

He said: “Many congratulations, and many thanks for your generous donation.”

Dean said: “People rarely get the privilege to reach 60 years of marriage, so we felt like that was something worth celebrating!

"It hasn’t always been easy, there’s been ups and downs, but we’ve reached this milestone and it was wonderful to celebrate with good friends and family.”

Pam and Dean have two children together, Lorraine Elliot and Gary Hammond, as well as six wonderful grandchildren.
