LEADER readers have had their say on parking at the Maelor Hospital after the Health Board vowed to improve the 'challenging' situation.

Last week, Betsi Cadwaladr Health Board told the Leader that they were actively looking for ways to alleviate the current parking issues at the Hospital.

There are hopes that Plas Gororau, a new site purchased by the Health Board last year will aid in doing so, but it is yet to open.

In the meantime, patients, visitors and staff are continuing to struggle with parking on site.

Cars are being parked on double yellow lines, pavements and grass verges in an attempt to make appointments, see relatives or clock in for work on time.

Michelle Greene, East Integrated Health Community Director at Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, said: “We fully appreciate how challenging car parking can be for patients, visitors and staff and we do not underestimate the stress and anxiety it can cause.

"We are actively looking at a range of solutions to address the issue of car parking.

"Also, later this year we will begin to relocate some services currently provided at the hospital to Plas Gororau, which has 200 additional car parking spaces. This development will play an important role in alleviating car parking pressures at the hospital.”

We asked Leader readers whether they had struggled with parking at the hospital and here's what they had to say.

Stuart Parry said: "Always have problems and they're getting worse"

Sarah Howard said: "I had a call from hospital to get there as my nan was deteriorating, I was circling the car park for 90 mins trying to get a space. A staff member helped in the end."

Nathan Parry said: "Should have put a multi-storey on the back car park."

Sharon Gabriel said: "Saw a lady in a mobility scooter a few weeks ago stuck on a path as couldn't get passed as the cars were half path half road."

Tracey Rush said: "The staff coming in on a late shift struggle too. A solution is well overdue."

Carl Langer said: "It's a joke."

Jackie Weaver said: "I've struggled there for the past 10 years."

Wrexham's MP Sarah Atherton said: “I am well aware of this issue and have been inundated with constituents telling me about their problems parking at the Maelor.

“There is a shortfall of more than 600 spaces at the hospital site and constituents are telling me that they have missed appointments because they are unable to park. This is unacceptable and urgent action is needed. I am meeting the Health Board’s East Integrated Health Community Director – who is responsible for the Maelor Hospital – tomorrow morning, where parking will be top of my agenda.”
