FLINTSHIRE students collected their GCSE results today (Thursday August, 24) to find out how well they did after months of studying and hard work.

Councillor Mared Eastwood, Flintshire Council cabinet member for Education, Welsh Language, Culture and Leisure, said: "The council is very proud of our year 11 pupils on their hard work to achieve the grades that they have received.

"I send them my warmest congratulations and wish them every success in their next steps.

"I would also like to express our thanks to all the staff in schools who have worked so hard to enable their students’ success and to all the parents and carers who have provided support and encouragement to their children.”

Jane Cooper, headteacher Alun School said: "This year’s results continued the school’s history of academic excellence. Year 11 pupils earned well over 600 A*/A grades between them with almost half of students receiving one or more top grade.

"Outstanding individual performances include: Nerys Davies (12A*), Hannah Livesey (11A*, 1A), Eleri McGuckin (11A*, 1A), Thomas Lloyd-Hughes (10A*, 2A) and Iestyn James (9A*, 2A, 1B). Each of them also achieved a distinction in their additional maths qualification.

"We congratulate all pupils on their results and are very proud of the hard work, dedication and resilience they have shown. Thank you to the parents/carers and the school’s staff for supporting the pupils throughout.

"We look forward to celebrating with them and welcoming them back to the school’s successful sixth form in September."

Hawarden High School

Simon Budgen, headteacher, paid tribute to all the students who have worked so hard, particularly given the challenges they have faced during their schooling.

“Our young people should be proud of their examination results. It is particularly pleasing to see so many pupils achieving the gold standard of five A*-C grades and therefore gaining passport for entry into our Sixth Form or go on to employment/training.

"In fact, nearly half of all grades awarded were Grades A*, A or B demonstrating the commitment of all pupils to their studies.

Argoed High School

Students and staff at Argoed High School are celebrating their best ever results with a significant increase in the number of top grades making this the school’s highest performing year to date.

Lily Middleton achieved the outstanding feat of straight A*s in all her subjects and was joined by several classmates in receiving 10 or more top grades.

The school said it is particularly pleasing to see so many pupils achieving the gold standard of five A*-C grades and therefore gaining passport for entry into its Sixth Form or go on to employment/training.

The school is very pleased with the performance of a number of subjects that achieved over 90% A*-C grades this year, notably; Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Business, Drama, Engineering and Geography.

Paul Smith, headteacher, said: “We are incredibly proud of the achievements of all our students, especially considering the disruption to their school career. They have shown resilience and a determination to succeed that is admirable and have responded positively to the support and guidance from our staff, resulting in the excellent results they have achieved today.

Flint High School

This morning has been a busy time for staff at Flint High School making sure that every student receives the correct support with their GCSE results. Every single student has had advice and guidance on the next steps, with many students choosing to continue with their education at Flint High School.

This year Flint High School has seen the best results for their top performing students.

The top performers are: Adele Crimes 11A*/A, Ellen Thomas 11A*/A, Alys Davies-Abbott 10 A*/A, Olivia Francis-Owen 10A*/A, Poppy Francis-Owen 10A*/A, Molly Griffiths 10A*/A, Ruby Burns 9A*/A, Nia Hughes 9A*/A.

Claire Millington, headteacher, said: “I would like to congratulate our students on their examination results. They have been an incredible year group and have contributed so much to our school community. These outcomes are a reflection of their hard work, and they are very well deserved.

“Each student should be rightfully proud of their achievements, and I wish them well in their futures. All of our students, regardless of their outcomes, have worked tirelessly to achieve their full potential.

"They deserve a great deal of praise today and I hope they feel equally proud of our year 11’s achievements.”

Ysgol Treffynnon

Ysgol Treffynnon has in fact doubled the number of students achieving the top grades compared to last year and, importantly, 35 per cent of FSM students have gained 5 or more A* - C grades.

Amongst the highest performers are Rhianna Baldwin Jones 5A* 5A, Grace Bellis 5A* 1A, Lewis Bowen 2A* 4A, Daniel Davies 6A* 2A, James Hughes 1A* 7A, and Maison Shipton 4A* 6A.

John Weir, headteacher, is thrilled with the students’ excellent results this year.

He said: “At Ysgol Treffynnon, we remain unwavering in our commitment to providing exceptional education and support to our students, regardless of the challenges they may experience.

Connah's Quay High School

James Forber, headteacher, said: "I want to take this opportunity to thank all of our Year 11 students for their hard work, especially in light of the challenges over the last few years, we wish all of our students well in their next steps.

"The governing body would also like to thank our staff for guiding our learners through this time and preparing them so well for the future.

"We thank our parents, governors and wider community for their support in ensuring that every child has been supported over their time in school." 

Some notable performances came from Aoife Wilson-Davies (8A*s and 3 As), Natalia Gancheva (5A*s and 5As), Katie Roden (4A*s and 6 As) Jack Gregory (5A*s and 3As), Callum Leach (5A*s and 3As).

Castell Alun

Students at Castell Alun returned wonderful GCSE results again this year. There was great celebration amongst many families early on Thursday morning as results were released.

At the stunning peak of overall academic performance, Natasha Boleyn and Joshua Williamson now count a stunning 13 A*s to their names. Eleri Devine scooped a whopping haul of 12 A* grades and Max Chadwick produced a haul of 11A*s.

Headteacher, Colin Ellis, who also thanks parents, along with teaching and support staff, said: "Our congratulations go to all students, and, with the last few years having been difficult to navigate for so many, we are truly proud of our students and their incredible efforts.

"Worthy of special mention was Kateryna Yefremova, who started her education in Wales in September 2022. Kateryna joined Castell Alun from the Ukraine at the start of Year 11 and demonstrated a superb work ethic from her first day.

"Despite the language challenge she committed herself wholeheartedly to her studies and today gained an A* in Maths and a collection of many other A and B grades."

 

Ysgol Maes Garmon

Nia Wyn Jones, acting headteacher, said: "We are delighted with the GCSE results our students have achieved. The atmosphere in the school this morning has been great, with students, staff, parents and carers openly displaying their joy!

"We are so proud of every one of our students, many of whom have surpassed their target grades.

"This couldn't have been achieved without the support of our amazing teachers and teaching assistants who have worked so hard to ensure our students do their best.  

"We must congratulate Nia Jones who attained an A* in all her qualifications.

"We hope our students enjoy the rest of the day and celebrate their achievements! Congratulations to all the GCSE students across Flintshire and Wrexham- it's fantastic to see such great results within the counties."

Elfed High School
