A MAN who tried to sneak stolen wine out of a supermarket in his shorts and then became abusive when challenged has been put behind bars.

Martyn Hughes, of Y Wern, appeared at Wrexham Magistrates Court on Monday.

The 35-year-old admitted that on August 16, he stole goods worth £14 from Tesco in Wrexham, and that on that occasion he also assaulted security guard Mark Teburi, as well as breaching a community protection notice (CPN).

He further admitted that two days later, he returned to the store and stole items worth £13.70.

Prosecutor Justin Espie told the court that the defendant's CPN has a number of prohibitions, one of which is not to use foul, abusive, threatening or abusive behaviour.

On August 16, he entered Tesco in Crescent Road at around 6.30pm and was monitored by Mr Teburi.

The defendant was seen concealing two bottles of wine in his shorts.

He was challenged by Mr Teburi as he attempted to walk out, and became "aggressive," claiming he'd paid for the wine.

The bottles were retrieved but Hughes "lunged" at the victim, and continued with his aggressive behaviour.

He said: "He's a f****** d****** - come outside, we will sort you out."

On August 18, the defendant attended the store again and took items, which once again were recovered when he was challenged.

Mr Espie told the court the defendant had 61 previous offences and his latest crimes had put him in breach of a suspended sentence; 12 weeks suspended for 12 months.

A probation officer told the court the defendant had been working with the probation service and whilst he had been attending appointments, he frequently rescheduled them.

"He's changing them around to suit his lifestyle," the officer said.

"His drinking has gone out of control, which is a causal factor in his offending behaviour, particularly around shop theft."

Pierce Blythen, defending, told the court that in his own words, his client was "a binge alcoholic," but that he is "actively trying to better himself."

The defendant had undertaken a detox programme and is attending appointments at The Elms, as well as with Probation workers.

The Leader:

"Mr Hughes fully accepts his behaviour on the day was unacceptable," Mr Blythen told the court.

"His behaviour is driven by his alcohol consumption."

The Magistrates handed down an £80 fine to encompass both theft offences, a further £80 fine for the assault and another £80 fine for the breach of a CPN.

Hughes must pay £50 compensation to Mr Teburi.

After deliberating on the breach of the suspended sentence, the magistrates opted to activate it in full, sending Hughes to jail for 12 weeks.
