HAYS TRAVEL Wrexham say they are 'very concerned' about the ongoing crisis in Rhodes and Corfu but expect things to return to normal next week.

Wildfires have ripped their way through large parts of the Greek island in the last few days which has seen many holidaymakers evacuated from resorts amid the uncertainty.

As many as 10,000 Britons are estimated to be on the popular Greek island - part of which has been ravaged by the blazes, forcing many to sleep in schools, airports and sports centres - with repatriation flights to rescue holidaymakers landing back in the UK.

It comes after extreme heat with temperatures reaching over 40 degrees caused the fires, with authorities also beginning to evacuate tourists from large swathes of the island of Corfu on Sunday (July 23) after fires also began to spread.

The crisis has sparked many travel companies to cancel upcoming flights and holidays but there is now hope that the fires are starting to become under control with normality to be resumed sooner rather than later.

Don Bircham, of Wrexham-based Hays Travel North West, which has 46 stores across North Wales and the North West, said: “We are obviously very concerned about the situation in Rhodes and Corfu which are popular destinations for our customers.

“Looking after holidaymakers in the affected areas is handled by the tour operators in the resorts so in the main we are speaking to people who are booked to travel this week and where necessary we will find alternative destinations for them.

“It is a fluid situation but the main tour operators, Tui, Jet2 and Easyjet, have cancelled holidays to the affected areas up to the end of this week but I believe the fires are under control and would expect that things will have returned to normal by next week.”

A British Foreign Office spokesman confirmed a Rapid Deployment Team had arrived on Rhodes to support travel operators in bringing Britons home.
