PATIENTS at a hospice in Wrexham are benefitting from new holistic treatments.

Nightingale House Hospice is helping patients deal with the emotional effects of treatment through complementary therapy.

With nearly 20 years of experience, Nikki Roberts, a complementary therapist at Nightingale House, helps patients to relax and caters treatments to each individual’s needs.

Nikki said: “Complementary therapy is about looking after the person within, giving them time for themselves away from the stress outside. Life can often be a rollercoaster of emotions, especially when faced with a life-limiting condition. That’s where complementary therapies come in and can benefit so many people.

“Palliative care was always where I wanted to work, and providing treatments such as reiki, reflexology, and aroma therapies at Nightingale House is everything I have ever wished for.

“The treatments we offer can help patients in multiple ways from stress and anxiety to sleep problems which undoubtedly a lot of our patients suffer with, that can impact the rest of their wellbeing.”

One of the patients Nikki has supported is Bernie Edwards, who was diagnosed with cancer.

Bernie said the holistic approach 'changed everything' during her treatment.

She added: “Due to the impact my condition had on my life, I felt very isolated and low because I couldn’t do things I used to. My specialist recommended that I contact my local hospice to find out if they could offer any support. I was surprised with what services were available to me through Nightingale House.

“It changed everything, I just felt lifted and good about myself again. Nikki provided me with reflexology and reiki treatments, which gave me a sense of wellbeing. I also had physiotherapy and hydrotherapy at the hospice. It helped with my joint pain, and I became more active while building my confidence again.

“It's been a massive shock since finding out I had cancer. So, even if it is just an hour and a half at the hospice, it’s my sanctuary. I can switch off… I absolutely love coming here! As soon as you walk through the doors, each and every person at Nightingale House makes you feel special.”
