THE Kings of Leon gigs held at the Racecourse over the weekend showed Wrexham is ready to host significant events, a lead councillor said.

The American rock band headlined two shows in Wrexham on Saturday and Sunday and were joined by Far From Saints and the Declan Swans.

It was a memorable bank holiday weekend, with thousands attending the gigs over the two nights.

It was the first music gig at the Racecourse since Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds took over the club in 2021.

Kings of Leon have only increased the appetite for more live music in Wrexham, with the city ready to stage significant events according to lead member for economy and Regeneration, Cllr Nigel Williams.

He said: “The Kings of Leon gigs over the bank holiday weekend appear to have been another great success!

"As well as attracting thousands of visitors into Wrexham – many who made a weekend of it – the boost that it undoubtedly gave to our hospitality sector and wider economy was well received.

"Above all, it continues to highlight that Wrexham can stage significant events such as these.

"With the ongoing work with our tourism sector, infrastructure improvements via our Placemaking work and more, we are sure that Wrexham will continue to grow as an attractive destination for great events like these in the future.”

The hospitality sector certainly had a boost from the gigs. The Turf held events on both days, which proved a success.

Wayne Jones, landlord of the Turf, said: "Both days were a huge success, both days at the Turf we’re sell-outs, with 499 people outside and capacity inside.

"Both days went off without any trouble and everyone I believe had a wonderful time. It’s great so many new people get to see and feel the true Wrexham welcome and hospitality.

The Maesgwyn, which lies opposite the Racecourse also enjoyed the weekend and is hoping for more events like it in the future.

A spokesperson added: "It was great to see another event bringing extra footfall to the area. The weather plus the buzz around the town at the minute added up to an amazing weekend.

"People from within the area and outside of the area all joined us for a really successful weekend of food, drink and music. We hope there’s more to come in the future."
