Pupils in the school's junior football team are celebrating after an incredible season.

Coached by Year 3 teacher Rob Stock, the team won the Urdd Flintshire and Wrexham Primary Tournament, Active Wrexham's 'World Cup' and Wrexham AFC Community Trust's Premier League Primary stars tournament.

As a result of winning those, they went on to take part in more regional and national tournaments, representing Wrexham AFC in the regional stage of the Premier League Primary stars competition in Oldham.

They have since gone on to win another local tournament at Brickfield Rangers and represented the county in both the National Primary Five-a Side Festival in Newtown and Urdd National Finals in Aberystwyth, finishing as runners up in both competitions.

Rob said: "They've been absolutely fantastic this year, I've never seen anything like it. They've done incredibly well.

"They've won some of their tournaments in Wrexham without even letting a goal in!"

Proud coach Rob has high hopes of eventually seeing one of the team grace the pitch as a player for Wrexham AFC, with all of them already huge Reds fans, even pre-takeover.

He said: "I've taught these lads since Year 3, so it's been nice to see. Now most are Year 5 or 6, with some about to go up to high school.

"Sadly Aberystwyth was out last tournament but we're hoping to play a friendly against our good friends at Acton Primary School.

"I've been running the team for eight years but we've never had a team like this.

"They're like superstars at the school. Every time they come back from a tournament they go round all the classes to show the trophy."

Shipwrecked adventures for pupils at Ysgol Sychdyn, during Wales Outdoor Learning Week.

For Wales Outdoor Learning Week, pupils of Year 4 found themselves shipwrecked on a desert island!

Over the course of the week they explored the island, competed in a range of challenges, and learnt the necessary skills needed for survival.

Along the way they encountered a Welsh speaking shop, harsh weather conditions and piranha-infested waters!

Following the week, the school has been contacted by Natural Resources Wales who are creating an education video based on the children's 'shipwreck' experience.

It was a memorable week, with incredible feedback by pupils and staff alike.

Year 11 Immersion Course pupils at Ysgol Maes Garmon.

It is five years since the Welsh medium high school welcomed these pupils. They joined the Immersion Course in 2018 from a variety of English primary schools in Flintshire - Ysgol Derwenfa, Ysgol Hawarden VC, Ysgol Parc y Llan, Ysgol Maesglas, Ysgol yr Esgob, Ysgol Nercwys, Ysgol Bryncoch, Ysgol y Waun and Ysgol Rhoshelyg.

The Immersion Course at Ysgol Maes Garmon gives pupils from English primary schools the choice to change the language of their education. Within two year they become fluent Welsh speakers.

The journey of these pupils was not easy. In 2020, when Covid-19 came and closed the schools, these pupils spent a period at home learning online. This experience was challenging for all pupils in the county but, trying to learn Welsh 'from a distance' was an additional challenge.

But, by working hard and showing perseverance, this group managed to continue their journey to learn Welsh successfully. By now they are in Year 11 and are sitting their exams, all through the medium of Welsh. All are fluent and proud of their Welshness.

This group has taken advantage of a variety of opportunities at Ysgol Maes Garmon and has contributed greatly to the life of the school.

Gwennan Thomas, Immerision Course co-ordinator, said 'We are extremely proud of them and wish them and all other pupils the very best in their GCSE and A Level exams.'

This year, 18 pupils will join the Immersion Course from the following primary schools: Ysgol Westwood, Ysgol Mynydd Isa, Ysgol Hawarden VC, Ysgol Derwenfa, Ysgol Nannerch, Ysgol Rhoshelyg, Ysgol Ty Ffynnon, Ysgol Cae'r Nant, Ysgol Brynffordd, Ysgol yr Esgob and Ysgol Bryncoch. They will spend four weeks at Maes Garmon in June before starting Year 7 in September.

Pupils in Year 5 and 6 at the Flintshire primary school, got creative to celebrate the Black History of Wales and beyond.

The topic culminated in a class assembly, with guest musician Tom Collins, from Bagillt. It was also the first time parents have been able to attend since the start of the pandemic.

Year 5 and 6 teacher Laura Cartwright said: "We did a few songs and parodies, talked about the importance of Martin Luther King Jr and Rosa Parks. We included a drama about how Rosa Parks helped end segregation

"And Tom is a good friend of the school, and we love his music, he's such a talented artist."

Tom sang his song Titanic with Year 5/6 pupils, which was a metaphor for the current world, and the lyrics resonated with the children, which they also studied.

He said: "It was a pleasure to share my song with the pupils of Ysgol Derwenfa. It's really nice to see the younger generations picking up on these social issues, making them more aware of what's going on in the world.

"To hear them sing it back and learn all the words was a bit overwhelming and I'm very proud of that. They're a great group and hopefully they can take something positive from this in the future."

As well of their performance, the children completed work based around Tom's song, and about Welsh community activist Betty Campbell and Black History, as well as studying song lyrics from Where Is The Love by Black Eyed Peas.

The class are now studying the life of Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton.
