THE LATEST instalment of a hit BBC series has helped a famous actor and comedian unearth links to Wrexham.

From early June, Who Do You Think You Are? will return to BBC One, following nine celebrities on extremely personal journeys as they each delve into unknown family ancestry.

And the latest series is said to be filled with astonishing revelations for the celebrities who have chosen to bare all in Series 20 of the show.

Actor and comedian Emily Atack discovers that she, Ryan Reynolds, Rob McElhenney and a certain football club have a lot more in common than she might ever have guessed.

According to several news outlets, the 33-year-old finds out that her great-grandfather was actually the very first person to put Wrexham on the map - way before Ryan and Rob ever did!

According to The Sun, Emily finds out that her ancestor, Edward Robbins, became famed for his involvement in Welsh football.

Edward, known as Ted, was the longest serving secretary of the Football Association of Wales, he clashed with the English Football League over their reluctance to free up their players for international duty.

Through his campaigning, the rule was eventually scrapped, meaning Welsh-born players, who were playing for English clubs, could still represent their country.

A source told the publication: 'Emily could not believe the link to Wrexham, particularly as the name is now so associated with Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, who co-own the club.

'She is in no way sporty either, so to hear her family had this pedigree came as a big surprise.'

The new series of Who Do You Think You Are? launches on BBC One this June.

Simon Young, BBC Head of History, says: “As one of Britain’s most beloved documentary series returns for series 20, the line-up of household names, and the array of astonishing family histories, grow from strength to strength. This series is often imitated but never bettered, and this latest edition demonstrates why.”

As well as Emliy Atack, the newest season of two-time BAFTA award-winning genealogy show, produced by Wall to Wall Media, will feature Claire Foy, Bear Grylls, Chris Ramsey, Kevin Clifton, Dev Griffin, Chris and Xand van Tulleken and Lesley Manville.
