Ysgol Bryn Gwalia, Mold
Cynefin project: Getting the children to identify with their local environment or 'Cynefin' which translates to a 'place we feel we belong' is really important at the school. This year each class has adopted an area in Mold as their project area and have studied the place and what it means to the people of the town. This term the children have worked with the local artist Danielle McIntyre, to produce some wonderful stitched pieces based on the children's original drawings.
She said of the experience in her blog: "Thank you for inviting me into your wonderful school. And thanks to the children for being willing to try a new skill and showing so much interest and enthusiasm - you are the beating heart of your school."
Mold Community Hospital work: The school continues to work with Mold Hospital and their patients on a weekly basis. Pupils visit and take part in many activities which brings a smile to all involved. The patients look forward to the children visiting and having their little chats. It's a wonderful community project that continues to grow year on year!
Urdd Success: Huge congratulations to Jessica, who will be representing Ysgol Bryn Gwalia as well as Wrexham and Flintshire in Llandovery in May, for Welsh recital Year 3 + 4. There is also a 2D art piece created by Cece in Year 5, which will be competing in the finals. Pob lwc to both!
Ysgol Penygelli, Coedpoeth
Year 5 pupils from the Wrexham school recently had a residential trip to Cardiff. Some of the highlights were a tour of the Principality Stadium and getting to meet Vaughan Gething, Minister for Economics at the Senedd.
Trelogan Playgroup
Children at the playgroup have planted 12 fruit trees in the grounds of Trelogan Community Centre, where they are based.
The orchard, consisting of apple, pear, plum and cooking apples, will provide fruit for future playgroup children to enjoy as part of their morning snack, but also for the rest of the community to benefit from.
Many children in the village walk to school, so will be able to pick their own fruit, along with the many dog walkers and residents of the Flintshire village.
The trees will provide welcome shade in the summer, for the children to sit under and enjoy a story, as well as encouraging wildlife.
Trelogan Playgroup embarked on a healthy eating project in January after securing a grant from Flintshire Local Voluntary Council (FLVC).
This has involved staff training and parent play sessions, where parents were invited into playgroup and encouraged to engage with their children in a range of fun, educational activities to highlight healthy foods and choices, using resources purchased with the grant.
Before breaking up for the Easter break, family and friends, the playgroup trustees, Cllr Glyn Banks, representatives from umbrella organisation EYW and gardeners from local caravan park, Tree Tops, came to join with the children in the planting of the 12 trees.
The event was followed by a well earned treat of tea and cake in the community centre.
The project will continue into the future with plans for the playgroup children to grow more fruit and vegetables and decorative flowers this summer. It is a great hands-on way to educate the children about what healthy foods are and where they come from, in order to empower them to make healthy choices, contributing to a healthy life style.
Peter Pan Nursery, Wrexham
Staff and children at the nursery got into the spirit of things ahead of Wrexham AFC’s big match at the weekend, with football themed activities.
Flags were donated by Wrexham Women’s Under 21s team, and they even had a ‘light that never goes out’ flag, donated by Andy Calverley.
Their cheers of ‘good luck’ and support must have been heard, with the Reds going on to win and claim promotion.
Westwood Primary School, Buckley
Members of the Year 5 Mini Police at the school recently had the honour of being mascots for one of the town's football teams.
The pupils joined players from Buckley Town FC at The Globe, over the Easter break, for their game against Prestatyn.
Taking part was Year 5 youngster Mia, who said: "It was amazing being a mascot, having the opportunity to watch the game and be with the outstanding players.
"They helped us understand football more and to make us more confident in playing games.
"Overall it was super fun and the game turned out amazing.
"I hope there will be a next time because we will happily do it again."
Ysgol Rhiwabon, Wrexham
Years 7 and 8 have been planting new trees along the school's sports fields, to enhance the look of the fields. The trees were supplied by The Woodland Trust.
Site maintenance, Nyall Monneypenny, ensured all the trees were planted correctly, and lent useful advice to the pupils who were planting them.
