World Book Day, at the start of March was the beginning of a few weeks of preparation and planning for the school community, as they got ready for their Story Time Scarecrow Trail.

The children had been very excited, talking about books and characters, voting for their favourites, and getting creative to make their class scarecrow characters.

Their fantastic creations became part of a scarecrow trail around the school field in their World Book Day ahead of the Easter break.

Each class took time through the day to explore and see which scarecrows they could name. All completed maps were added to a prize draw to win an Easter hamper, donated by the Acton Park Primary PTA. It was won by Victoria in Year 2.

All the children voted for their favourite scarecrow, with Dosbarth Aur and their Supertato scarecrow taking first place. Second place went to Dosbarth Tryfan with Gangsta Granny and third place went to Dosbarth Conwy and their Matilda scarecrow.

"It was lovely to see so many families exploring the scarecrow trail after school and a big thank you for all the new books gifted to us through our school Amazon Wish List.

"As a school, we are promoting reading for pleasure as a priority and events such as this really do help to excite and inspire our children.

On a rolling program throughout the year, families are invited into the school on a Thursday afternoon to spend time with their children on activities that might help them to support their child's learning.

Seen here are Year 5 and 6 children working with their parents on activities through their HWB accounts, a free educational platform all children in Flintshire have access to. This allows parents to have a greater understanding of how best to support their children.

After Easter, reception parents will be invited into school to take part in Family Learning. The afternoon is hosted by Sarah Blythe and Deb Edwards, who spend time planning and organising the activities with input from the children via Pupil Voice.

Before the Easter holidays, pupils and teachers building on connections previously made with residents and staff at Marleyfield Care Home in the town.

Since 2022, and over a number of visits, Westwood's Year 5 and 6 pupils have been building rapport with Marleyfield's residents by discussing current affairs, reading books to residents, sharing news stories from the children's newspaper, First News, singing in Welsh and sharing their favourite Welsh songs with some of the home's Welsh speaking residents.

Residents have enjoyed sharing stories about their past careers, journeys around the world and what life was like when they were growing up.

Westwood's deputy headteacher, Lynne Brown, has worked closely with Marleyfield's events coordinator Lyn Hulme to plan and coordinate visits.

Both are delighted with the high level of interaction between the children and residents, and the success of the visits in bridging the generation gap.

Recognising the huge benefits to both the children and the residents, Mrs Brown is keen to ensure her students at Westwood continue to visit regularly,.

She said: "Seeing different generations working together, and the high level of engagement, is extremely rewarding. The visits are a great benefit to everyone and the children are already asking 'When are we coming back again?'.

"I hope other schools in Buckley will read our story and establish links with other care homes in the community too. It is a fantastic way for children to learn; it is also important for residents to know there is support for them, from the community they live in."

Equally as keen are the residents. Dot Sheen said she loved that the children all had good manners and one very enthusiastic boy read the newspaper to her and Lillian, her close friend and another resident at the home.

Susan Pritchard, also a resident said she "enjoyed the kids coming to read" and is "looking forward to them coming again".

During their visit, resident Rita Hughes informed the children that as a young girl she was a trained soprano and as a young women had sung in many famous places, including the Albert Hall. Two of the children jumped at the opportunity to sing a verse of Calon Lan with Rita when she also said her first language was Welsh, much to the delight of staff and pupils.

Phyllis Tovey, 103, revealed to some of the children that "the secret to living a long and healthy life is to exercise everyday, never smoke and to avoid alcohol".
