A Wrexham golfer is looking to go proferssional, and needs support to help her compete this year and begin her career.

Lucy Jones, 23, from Holt, is starting her professional career in the sport, which she has played since she was three-years-old.

Since then, she has represented her club, Wrexham, and other north Wales counties as well as for Wales at U16, and U18 as an amateur.

Now she will be competing in the Ladies European Tour Access Series, which goes all over Europe, and is looking for help raising funds to cover travel expenses and entry fees.

A GoFundMe page has been set up recently to help cover costs, and so far has raised £337.

Lucy explained: “The goal is set for £750 as I wasn’t sure anyone would give but my year is going to cost £23,400 if I get into every event on the LETAS and Rose ladies series.

“I’m someone who doesn’t like asking or being cheeky for things but on the recommendation of local people in Holt they told me to put up a GoFundMe to try help towards some expenses. “

Lucy is also trying to get sponsorships from businesses and will be hosting a professional day at Wrexham Golf Club on June 24 aiming to raise funds.

She said: “At the age of eight I was allowed to become a member of Wrexham Golf club subsequently becoming junior captain, for all of this time Wrexham GC and its members have supported me massively.

“Wrexham Golf Club have also been very generous in letting me have the golf Course and facilities for the day on 24 June. I will be holding a professional day, people from all over can come play golf in the event. All the money from the day, Wrexham Golf Club kindly give to me in order to help set me up for my 1st professional year.”

Having got into the sport at a young age from copying her older brother, who she says she owes for getting her into the sport, going pro has always been a dream of hers.

Lucy said: “The dream has always been to be a professional golfer and play/compete on the Ladies European Tour. The ladies professional game in the last few years has really developed not only on the top tours but the smaller tours too.

“When I was younger only a select few would make it, the talent is still just as good or even better but there’s more ways of having a career as a professional now. Like in other sports, I’m a massive fan of women’s football (Arsenal wfc) and to see how that game is developing is a long time coming.”

She added: “The Ladies European Tour Access Series is kind of like a stepping stone tour for the Ladies European Tour, it is top standard as everyone is wanting to get to the next step. For me I want to build on from this tour, find my footing as a professional and see where it can take me, hopefully to the top of the game in Europe and competing.”
