A repair café held in Wrexham was visited by Mayor Cllr Brian Cameron where he was shown the importance of giving new life to everyday items.

Repair Cafe Wrecsam, which is normally held at Yellow and Blue on Henblas Street, will be moving with the community hub to Eagles Meadow ready for the next event in May.

The café, run by volunteers, aims to fix broken items brought in by the public for free, meaning that these items can be reused and recycled rather than thrown away.

The Mayor recently visited the café, and worked his way around the room chatting to the volunteers as they explained why they’re happy to give up two hours, one Saturday a month, to fix broken items brought into the cafe by members of the public.

Regular volunteer, John Henry, said: “It was good to see the Mayor at Wrexham Repair Cafe last Saturday where he was able to meet and talk with volunteer repairers and be shown how they give a new lease of life to clothing, furniture and electrical/mechanical items after a simple repair.

“It was explained that not only is this helping ensure that things are used for longer (thus reducing the need for landfill and Co2 emissions) but that it’s also helping struggling communities in face of current austerity programmes.

“This hopefully will kindle people’s enthusiasm for a sustainable society and a more secure future for both humans and the natural environment.”

Mayor Cllr Brian Cameron said: “It’s a marvellous idea and I’m pleased that Wrexham is one of the 100+ locations in Wales to be running this regular event.

“Wales declared a Climate Emergency back in September 2019 and, as a nation, we are proud to have the third highest recycling rate in the world. But recycling is not enough.

“If we are to limit the worst effects of global warming we need to rapidly reduce our carbon emissions in as many ways as we can. Repairing and reusing items, instead of throwing them away and buying new, is an excellent idea and I fully support it.”
