TRIBUTES have been paid to a 'wonderful' woman who ran a sweet stall at a Wrexham market for over 30 years.

Winnifred Doreen Roberts died aged 92 years old at Wrexham Maelor Hospital on February 4.

Affectionately known as 'Aunty Do', she was best known for having been in charge of the 'biscuit barrel' sweet stall in the butcher's market, selling a range of tasty treats.

It was there that she had spent most of her days from the 1960's to her retirement in the 1990's.

Before running the stall, Mrs Roberts had worked at both Busfields' clothing shop and Woolworths in Wrexham.

According to her only son Howard, she lived on Tudor Road in Wrexham and had married his dad and her late husband John in 1953.

As well as having son Howard and grand-daughter Catie in her life, Mrs Roberts herself was from a 'large family' that consisted of eight siblings and had lived in Wrexham all her life.

She had also run a toy shop on the market alongside the sweet stall during the 1960's and 70's.

Howard added: "She was a wonderful mother who devoted so much time to her friends and her family. She made some great friends on the market during her time there too.

"She used to love dancing with my dad, the pair of them would go to the old British Legion. My mum was a home bird, she was Wrexham born and bred."

Mrs Roberts' former colleague Claire Morris added: "She was a lovely lady who was kind enough to give me a Saturday job.

"I used to get my pay for the day and then got to choose half-a-pound of sweets to take home with me. I even got the present of a jumper from her every Christmas."

A funeral service and committal will take place at Pentrebychan Crematorium on Wednesday, March 1 at 2pm.
