Pupils, staff and volunteers for Golftyn CP School's Big Dig.

Last week, the school held a Big Dig, planting more than 250 trees and 500 bulbs.

As part of their work on Eco-Schools Wales, children noticed the school had some areas with no trees or hedges.

Children in Year 5 and 6 have been working on biodiversity and recognised this was an important area to improve.

The Eco-Committee applied to the Conservation Volunteers and were thrilled to receive 250 trees. Some were small trees, including rowan, bird cherry, downy birch, field maple, and aspen, and the rest were hedgerow, including hawthorn, hazel, blackthorn, dogwood and dog rose.

With so many trees arriving, parents and other family members were invited to come and join in planting.

There were more than 60 volunteers who were able to join with the children to dig holes, plant the trees and then add in support canes and surrounds to help protect the trees as they grow.

The Flintshire primary school's Gardening Club also donated more than 500 spring and summer bulbs, which were planted around the trees.

Everyone had a wonderful day, with lots of digging, worm hunts and even some delicious cake that was donated by parents to help the workers, served by the school's Criw Cymraeg and Year 6 helpers.

Staff at Golftyn were incredibly grateful to the family members for giving up their time to help. Many parents commented on how wonderful it was to join in with the children again, especially on a project that improves the school grounds and helps the environment.

The children were very excited to watch the trees grow over the years that they continue to attend school and into the future as well.

Reception class teacher Emma Roberts, alongside nursery teacher Karen Randles, said: "The children have been asking lots of different questions, and taking place in roleplay and activities based around certain jobs.

"The guests have been giving them a taster on what different jobs are all about.

"We've been doing lots of work on road safety too, and the children have made posters to try and encourage drivers to reduce their speed outside our school."

Year 1 and 2 children at the school were part of an event featuring Premier League footballers during Children's Mental Health Week.

The theme of the week was Let's Connect, and the whole school had been working on the topic. Through Amazing People Schools, pupils had the opportunity to be part of a streamed live call in schools across the country, talking with different footballers about mental health in sport.

Class teacher and health and wellbeing lead at the school, Helen Warner-Hunter, said it gave youngsters a chance to hear about the players' experiences, and ask questions.
