A train fire in Wrexham brought rail service between Chester and Wrexham general to a halt and caused a stretch of the A483 to close.

The 4.25am rail service travelling from Holyhead to Cardiff central was stopped near Wrexham General after reports of a fire on the train on Wednesday, February 8. 

North Wales Fire and Rescue were called to the station at 6.43am and mobilised four appliances from Wrexham and Deeside and one appliance from Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service to tackle the blaze.

Firefighters tackled a fire in the undercarriage of one of the train's carriages, using four sets of breathing apparatus and three hose reel jets to bring it under control.

North Wales Fire and Rescue operated on a multi-agency basis along with partners from North Wales Police, Network Rail, Transport for Wales, Welsh Ambulance Service and British Transport Police.

There were no reported injuries and passengers and staff were cared for by Network Rail and Transport Wales, with arrangements made to escort them from the affected area so they could continue their onward journey.

A spokesperson for British Transport Police reported: "Officers were called to the line in Wrexham at 6.48am today (8 February) following reports of a fire on a train.

"It was believed to have been caused by a hydraulic fault and has now been extinguished. Thankfully all passengers were safe and well."

A stretch of the A483 between Junction 5 A541 Mold Road (Gwersyllt) and J6 A5156 (Gresford Interchange) was closed for several hours due to the train being positioned directly under the carriageway.

Traffic Wales North & Mid reported at 7.41am, that: "Due to the location of the train and the close proximity to the carriageway it is in the interest of the traveling public to close the road. Diversion via J5 off slip /A541/B5445 Belgrave."

The closure resulted in queueing traffic on diverted routes including through Cefn-y-bedd affecting routes heading towards Chester. 

At 8.39am Traffic Mid and North Wales reported that lane two of the A483 between junction 5 and 6 had reopened with the full road reopening at 10.47am. 

Rail services were impacted between Chester and Wrexham General due to the line being blocked following the train fire. 

A spokesperson for Transport for Wales reported: "Train services running through these stations may be cancelled, delayed or revised."

Network Rail have reported that the damaged train was successfully recovered to a nearby loop at 11.30am which allowed network rail to safely get the passengers onto another train and move them on. 

However, at 2.55pm there were further reports of an incident on the track near Shrewsbury Station.

British Transport Police are currently investigating these reports and therefore the Shrewsbury to Wrexham lines are currently closed with trains being diverted.

A spokesperson for Brtish Transport Police said: "Officers were called to Shrewsbury station at 3.05pm today (Wednesday 8 February) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended, and sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Officers are currently working to identify the deceased and establish the full circumstances behind their death."
