A LIFELONG Wrexham AFC fan was made up after being gifted a painting of the Racecourse and the Turf to celebrate his 80th birthday.

Mervyn Davies, originally from Glyn Ceriog, has been going to watch the Reds for almost 70 years and has owned a season ticket in the Yale stand for the best part of 20 years.

After his dad took him to his first game in 1956, where he would dig around in the grass mound Kop, Mervyn has been Wrexham obsessed ever since.

Now living in Glossop, Mr Davies makes the 130-mile round trip to visit the Racecourse and watch the Reds every other weekend.

According to his son Gareth, Mervyn has been 'rejuvenated' by the Hollywood takeover of Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds.

After Gareth spotted a painting of the Racecourse and the Turf by local artist Mikey Jones, he knew it was the perfect gift for someone so usually 'tough to buy for'.

Gareth said: "Dad's life revolves around Wrexham AFC, he's been going since the mid-1950s and the club keeps him going.

"He is a difficult person to buy for, and after I saw the image online I knew that would be a perfect gift.

"I wanted to get him something that reminded him of his love for the club."

It appears to have gone down very well with Gareth adding his dad was 'delighted' with the painting and it was hung on the wall almost immediately.

Mervyn agreed that it was a brilliant gift, and told how birthday celebrations were tailored around Wrexham.

"I was down south celebrating my birthday on the Sunday when Wrexham played Sheffield United so unfortunately I couldn't go, but I still had a great time.

"Although I made sure I was back in front of the TV for 4pm, there was no way I was missing it!

"My dad used to take me as a lad and this is now my 67th season.

"I've seen an awful lot in that time, but with the new owners, it is all very exciting.

"Let's hope we can get back into the football league this time."

After hearing Mervyn's story, Mikey Jones couldn't think of a better place for the original to go.

"Usually I don't really want to sell the originals, but after speaking to Gareth, I thought that there would be no better home for it.

"I've had a great response to the painting and it was brilliant to see the post of Mervyn with the picture.

"It's great to see someone is enjoying your work."

Mikey also echoed Mervyn's thoughts about the excitement in Wrexham at the minute.

"Some of the pieces I'm doing of Wrexham are doing really well now, so I'm going to look at doing more pieces about the club and the city centre.

"People are really proud to be from Wrexham, historically we'd been looked down upon compared to more affluent areas, but not anymore.

"Wrexham is where it's at."
