A man has been jailed after he left a vulnerable pedestrian knocked out in the street following an unprovoked assault.

Harry Jones, of Victoria Road in Brynteg, appeared at Mold Crown Court on Thursday afternoon.

The 41-year-old had previously admitted offences including assault occasioning actual bodily harm, criminal damage and threatening behaviour - as well as three counts of assaulting emergency workers.

Ryan Rothwell, prosecuting, told the court that the first offences in time were the assaults against emergency workers.

Whilst serving a sentence at HMP Berwyn in October last year - also imposed for assaulting an emergency worker - he became agitated while getting his medication.

After being escorted back to his cell by three guards, telling them "I could knock you out if I wanted," he spat on all three of them.

Mr Rothwell said the offence marked his sixth conviction involving spitting at officers, with a total of nine assaults against emergency workers since 2019.

The second set of offences happened in the centre of Wrexham on January 6 this year, following his release from HMP Berwyn.

Whilst in drink, and in a series of events captured on CCTV, he exited a pub on High Street and punches a complete stranger to the head.

He then kicked the victim, Derek Humphries, and threw him to the ground before kicking him in the face, leaving him slumped unconscious against a planter at the side of the road.

Members of the public attempted to come to Mr Humphries' aid, while the defendant walked up and down the street making gestures, then shadow-boxing shirtless in the middle of the road.

Police arrived shortly afterwards and arrested him.

On the way to custody, he repeatedly spat in the police vehicle cell, and told officers "f*** off" whilst making a 'Nazi salute.'

Whilst watching the CCTV footage during the hearing, Judge Rhys Rowlands said: "This is teatime in the middle of Wrexham; there's a young couple with a pram going past there.

"It's just absolutely appalling."

The Leader:

In a victim statement, Mr Humphries said the attack left him feeling very vulnerable and scared.

He said: "I'm only 5'2'' - everyone else was taller than me. I was the easy target."

Mr Humphries said the assault left him with memory problems.

Henry Hills, defending, said: "The best mitigation I can submit is that he entered prompt guilty pleas.

"The offences are part of a pattern of similar behaviour.

"He understands this was a vicious and unprovoked attack on a vulnerable victim."

When hearing from Mr Hills about the impact on the victim, the Judge added: "He could have killed him."

When handing down the sentence, Judge Rowlands told the defendant: "As regards the prison officers, from where I am sitting - and from any normal, decent individual's view - that behaviour is completely disgusting and unacceptable.

"Mr Humphries was doing no harm at all and in drink, or affected by drugs, you picked on him.

"You were 'off your head' to adopt the vernacular, and behaved in this violent way in front of ordinary people going about their daily lives."

Jones was jailed for a total of 39 months.
