WORK to demolish and replace the historic Kop at the Racecourse ground is now underway.

Plans to re-develop that part of Wrexham AFC's home ground were given the green light by Wrexham Council's planning committee in November 2022.

The re-development will raise the capacity of the stadium from 10,000 to 15,500.

Before the club was purchased by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in 2021, fans had long dreamed of a new stand to replace the current Kop which has been derelict for almost 15 years.

And now those dreams look set to become a reality with the new Kop anticipated to be open as early as the 2024/25 season.

As well as being a fantastic facility for Wrexham AFC, it is also hoped that the stand can be used for the return of Wales' football team playing its matches in North Wales once it is complete.

The club shared a picture of how the Kop now looks mid-demolition on Monday, January 9, with the caption 'For the times, they are a-changin'.

That led to some reminiscing from fans underneath the Twitter post.

@Wreckin_Wrobin wrote: "Despite the obvious need to rebuild and incredible plans for what it will become, it's sad to see this taken down when thinking about the time spent on that terrace. Saw A LOT of football from there!"

@WRXLewis added: "I watched my first ever football match in there in 1995. I grew up watching @Wrexham_AFC in the Kop. When the new stand is built I hope kids have the experience of watching a boss Wrexham team like I was privileged to have been able to see. We’re on our way back."

@Shonie75 said: "Those steps have held the feet of generations of fans, I’m actually quite sad at seeing it going piece by piece."

Wayne Jones, Wrexham fan and Landlord of the Racecourse's neighbouring Turf pub, also shared his thoughts saying: "This is actually quite sad :("

Many other Wrexham supporters have been sharing their greatest memories of the original Kop with us over the past few weeks.

Several others have got in touch to tell us they believe that the new Kop should pay tribute to one of its greatest characters.

Ian ‘Jacko’ Roberts was the main singer in the Kop for many years and later the Glyndwr University Stand before he died at the age of 55 in 2017 following a cancer battle.
