A WREXHAM-based Scouts club has had to cancel all events it had planned for Christmas after a burst pipe ruined its equipment and part of the building it is based in.

The First Pen-y-cae Scouts' headquarters on Bryn-y-Barcut in Pen-y-Cae suffered the water damage over the weekend of December 17 and 18.

The freezing cold temperatures throughout the week before led to a pipe in the loft freezing over, despite the building being used daily.

The pipe then thawed out over the weekend and burst causing a 'massive leak' and 'significant damage' to the building and some equipment.

A spokesperson for the Scouts said: "The pipe thawed at the weekend causing a massive leak and significant damage to the loft, the ceiling boards and ground floor, damaging much of the camping equipment and general kit in ground floor storage.

"We still don’t know the state of much of the kitchen equipment and there is a massive job ahead of us to assess how much of the equipment can be salvaged.

"We do know that we will need new ceilings, the electrics will require major work, and we will have to replace furnishings and floor coverings in the main part of the building.

"We don’t yet know how much of the camping and general kit can be salvaged and we are working to assess this now, although we know that some of it will have to be replaced."

The incident has left the scouts having to call off all of their festive plans for the end of the month.

The spokesperson added: "We have had to cancel all Scouting activities planned for the HQ including the Christmas party, and have only been able to continue with activities that were run away from the HQ."
