A Flintshire donkey rescue has commended the generosity of residents and organisations for providing water after their pipes froze.

River Link Donkeys and Animal Sanctuary is based next to Greenacres Animal Park in Deeside.

As a result of the plummeting temperatures as low as -9C this week, the sanctuary was left with frozen pipes and no access to water.

Volunteers at the sanctuary took to social media on Wednesday, December 14, to appeal for help and assistance.

Within half an hour, several members of the public and local organisations came to the sanctuary's rescue.

In a social media post a spokesperson for the sanctuary said: "One lady [...] went to the Co-op to buy some water, a family took some containers home to fill them, another couple went to Dale Side Garden Centre to fill some containers."

The sanctuary then went on to specifically thank Dale Side Garden Centre who have allowed the sanctuary to fill containers at any time.

Founder of River Link Donkeys and Animal Sanctuary, Elizabeth Walker, said: "It really highlights the community spirit and what a lovely community we live in."

The sanctuary currently cares for 35 donkeys, 52 horses and 30 sheep and volunteers even support members of the community who are unable to walk dogs or pay for pet food.

The organisation is always looking for more volunteers and Elizabeth emphasised that the work is "strenuous but very rewarding" and would be perfect for a passionate animal lover.

Since the rise in costs over recent months the sanctuary has seen an increase in the amount of animals they are taking in.
