An organisation which supports refugees across North Wales has said they are inundated with requests for heaters over the winter season.

Refugee Kindness - North Wales launched two years ago on August 21, 2020.

They deliver donated household items to refugees across North Wales, as well as assist with medical, legal, housing, and employment advice sign-posting.

The charity was born after local Wrexham resident, Rachel Watkin, posted a request for donated furniture via Facebook, to be given to a refugee family that had been relocated to Wrexham.

The charity has been working hard over recent weeks to deliver Christmas gifts to over 172 children.

Each child has received a small sack including four or five presents which are specific to each child.

Although many families do not celebrate Christmas or are reluctant to take the generous gifts, founder Rachel Watkin believes it is important to say: "This is from us in return as in celebrations such as Eid the families are so welcoming to us."

As temperatures fall as low as -9C this week many of us have been adorning extra layers or using heaters to stay warm.

For many of the families the rising cost of heating has made them fearful to put central heating on at all.

Rachel continued: "We have been inundated with requests for electric heaters, quilts and pillows."

Christmas is often a time when family members come together, however, for many of the refugee families they may have not seen family members for several years.

Rachel added: "Some have grandchildren they have never seen, or have parents pass away and it is always very difficult."

The charity supports over 80 families living in Wrexham and across North Wales and is constantly looking to recruit more volunteers.

The charity needs volunteer drivers to help deliver items to families and would also benefit from help running the online side and helping families with administrative tasks.
