The Hawarden Santa Dash saw runners battling the frosty conditions to raise money for charity and feel festive.

Back for a fifth year, the Santa Dash is organised by Hawarden Community Events, where runners could sign up for a £10 fee and get a free Santa suit.

The Santa’s gathered early this morning (Sunday, December 11) ready to go, despite some early concerns about the weather conditions.

After a warm up just after 11am, the runners set off though Gladstone Playing Fields, the location having moved from the orginial Gladstone's library.

Each runner went at their own pace, but the first few to pass the finish line did so in just over five minutes. Within fifteen minutes, all the runners had made it back.

Even festive pets joined the route with the runners, everyone dressed in Christmas attire if not a Santa suit.

One of the organisers Helen Rees, explained that the event this year will be raising money for Nightingale House Hospice, where a friend who is battling a brain tumour is currently receiving care.

She said: “I had breast cancer last year, and a met a lovely lady in hospital who also had breast cancer but she had a brain tumour six years before, and her brain tumour has come back and she’s end of life now.”

One of the runners, Tracy Thomas was also representing the hospice while raising money.

She said: “I’m a Nurse Consultant at Nightingale House and it's just a really good cause making money for the hospice, and people keeping themselves fit in the meantime!”

It was thought that around 50 runners attended the event, though it is not yet known how much the total raised is.

Hawarden Community Events had also organised a Victorian Market at the beginning of the month so the total number raised will be added to what was raised at the market.
