Wrexham has jingled all the way with a festive Christmas light switch on celebration through the town.

The festive event began at Queen's Square park at 4.15pm on Thursday, November 24.

Mayor Brian Cameron opened the event with a speech marking the festive occasion, which is the first Christmas Wrexham will hold it's city status.

Speaking to the Leader he said: "It is always exciting for Wrexham to welcome in the Christmas season but as the last few years have been difficult this year is especially exciting."

It is the first time that the city’s lights will have been switched on with members of the public present since before the pandemic.

This was followed by carols led by a brass band and a community choir and splendid performances from families in the crowd.

Families gathered around the beautiful Christmas tree for the traditional light switch on as children were encouraged to wave their wands to light the tree.

Children were invited to bring their own magic wand to the event as well as ones which were made at a workshop held in Tŷ Pawb on Saturday, November 19.

At 4.50pm a marching band and street entertainers lead families through the city centre where children helped to turn on the Christmas lights, street by street, as they made their way to Eagles Meadow.

The street entertainers consisted of three nutcracker soldiers on stilts as well as a magic Jack Frost.

Once at Eagles Meadow guests were entertained through a full staged finale event, featuring Abz Love formerly from 5ive, supported by Passmore, Khalysys, Redd and Belle.

The event was well attended with guests congregating infront of the stage and on balconies overlooking.

The two hours of entertainment concluded with the big switch on at 7pm which allowed the city to truly sparkle.

This was the first of many Christmas events held in Wrexham over the coming month.

The date for the Victorian Christmas market has already been confirmed as Wednesday 7 December.

The Victorian Christmas market, Wednesday November 7, will feature over 100 stalls selling a host of festive goodies and gifts alongside Victorian Street entertainers and a traditional carousel.

It will stretch from Queens Square to St Giles’ Church from noon until 8pm.
