A WOMAN originally from Wrexham is enjoying the 'amazing' experience of watching Wales play in the World Cup in Qatar - where she now lives.

Karen Wallace Salisbury left Wrexham for the middle east six years ago after her husband Stuart was offered a new job opportunity there.

Both of them had previously worked at Wrexham Maelor Hospital but moved Qatar when Stuart was offered a job as a resuscitation manager at Hamad Hospital.

Wales' first World Cup match in 64 years took place at the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium - not far at all from their current home at The Pearl in Doha.

The Group B match against USA ended in a 1-1 draw with Gareth Bale's late penalty securing a vital point for Wales.

And Karen and Stuart were able to experience the action unfold first hand in what was the first ever Wales match Karen had attended.

She said: "It was amazing and there was an awesome atmosphere. The whole experience here is incredible, and seeing so many Welsh fans here is amazing.

"Experiencing it in person has to be one of the most magical times of my life, and getting to share it with so many fellow Welsh fans in the stadium was electric.

"This was my first Welsh game I’ve ever attended, but it will not be my last. My husband has created a football monster now!"

Commenting on Wales' chances at the World Cup, Karen added: "I would love to say we could reach the final, but I think that would be a dream.

"Being in the World Cup is something I never thought I would see, as it’s been a while and the pressure must be horrendous for the guys. I will be there for the next two games with everything crossed."

Being from Wrexham, Karen and Stuart are both also Wrexham AFC fans and still keep an eye on what is unfolding back home.

They still attend matches at the Racecourse whenever they return home too.

Karen added: "We are following Wrexham AFC very closely as my husband has been a fan since a very young age.

"We are still season ticket holders, and go when we’re home. We’ve loved watching the documentary and seeing friends and family on it has made us quite home sick."

Karen is now looking forward to the next few matches for Wales in Qatar and hopes they will advance into the next round.

She said: "We’ve got tickets for Iran and England, and if we get through we’ll be there to cheer our boys on."
