Scouts in Wrexham are aiming to launch the newest branch of their family tree with activities for boys and girls aged four and five.

Previously, the youngest age range was six- to eight-year-olds in the Beaver Scouts but studies have shown the benefits of early years education, particularly with informal after school provision.

The Scouts hope to build on the successes they have had running programmes for older children, with an established 115-year history behind them.

Lead Volunteer for Wrexham Scouts, David Morris said: “We’re excited to start Squirrels in Wrexham. However, it will come as no surprise that we don’t have a ready made group of adults who’ve been standing by bored for the last few years waiting for this to come along!”

"We have the programme, the buildings, the support and the badges, but one thing we do need if we’re to start this exciting new section is adult volunteers."

The Scouts are holding an open meeting at 5pm on Wednesday November 9 at Wrexham District Scout HQ opposite the General Station for any parents of potential Squirrel Scouts, or adults who are considering volunteering.

Chief Scout, Bear Grylls said: "It’s so important that our young people get to enjoy positive and healthy experiences that so many missed out on. We now need the help of more adult volunteers, so that children everywhere can experience the same life-changing opportunities to gain skills for life."
