A Wrexham-based charity is pleading for volunteers due to a rapid surge in demand over the past year.

Family Friends, located at the Salvation Army building in Wrexham, is a registered charity that supports vulnerable families, with children in the Wrexham area.

They have a team of seven trustees, seven staff and 25 volunteers, but are desperate for more support after seeing their demand go 'through the roof'.

Family Friends currently supports 91 families but has a growing waiting list of close to 100 families requiring some form of help.

Their team provides emotional and practical help for families who may not be coping too well with the challenges of everyday life.

They also support with issues such as anxiety, challenging behaviours, domestic abuse, debts, housing, mental health, disabilities, low self-esteem, the impact of covid, and more.

Due to covid and the recent cost of living crisis, Family Friends has put a plea out for volunteers to help cope with the current demand for services.

A spokesperson said: "Our referrals have gone through the roof since covid, our waiting list keeps getting bigger and that's a problem.

"We're desperate for volunteers to come and help, as we're trying to meet the needs of the Wrexham community.

"If you feel that you can make a difference in the community, please get in touch."

Family friends work with the voluntary, public and statutory sector, helping families and building positive relationships to ensure the best outcomes are achieved for the families they support.

Volunteers need no previous care experience, as the charity provides training, with new courses starting at the end of September.

The spokesperson added:  "Life experience is all you need, as you will be fully trained. All we ask is you can spare two to four hours per week supporting a family who needs you.

"Support may be helping in a group setting or it can be visiting a family in their own home and providing a listening ear."
