EXCITEMENT is building for the first episode of the Welcome to Wrexham documentary and executive director Humphrey Ker feels Reds’ supporters won’t be disappointed.

The hugely-anticipated documentary covers the rollercoaster journey since Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney became co-owners at Wrexham AFC 18 months ago.

The first episode premiered in America yesterday and will be available in the UK today, with the documentary being streamed on Disney+.

Ker gave Wrexham fans an insight into what they can expect from the series which comprises 16 episodes, lasting 30 minutes each, with two episodes to be released every Thursday.

“The number of posters I have seen all over the place in Los Angeles and then on my way here, I am really excited,” said Ker.

“I just hope people take to it as we have. It’s a lot of fun.

“Rob and Ryan are both people who take their businesses very seriously but don’t take themselves very seriously.

“I think you will see that kind of blend in the documentary.”

Wrexham supporters voted overwhelmingly in favour of the proposed takeover by Deadpool star Reynolds and McElhenney, best known for his role as Ronald “Mac” McDonald in the comedy series It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Ker feels that the duo, who have invested heavily both on and off the pitch, have proved any doubters wrong regarding their intentions at The Racecourse.

“I hope that some of the stuff we have done and some of the work we have undertaken will have convinced some people who weren’t convinced that our intentions are real and true, and what we want is to get the same thing as everybody else," said Ker.

“To get a really great, functional, community-centric football club on the go here.

“We have our ups and downs, we have our challenges where some of the changes that need to be done result in collateral issues that we didn’t anticipate.

“But we had nearly 10,000 people against Maidstone and that is a sign that people feel like we are heading in the right direction.”

Ker, an actor and writer, liaises between the A-listers and Fleur Robinson - CEO at The Racecourse - and Shaun Harvey, strategic adviser to the board.

Even before the high-profile takeover was completed in February 2021, Ker was a familiar face in the area and he has taken the club to his heart.

“It’s a special place and a very special football club,” said Ker.

“That was the thing that we saw from a distance but until you experience it yourself.

“You are always learning and every time I come back here - this is probably the 10th or 11th month I have spent in Wrexham over the course of this - it is starting to feel more like home.

“It feels more familiar and everyone couldn’t be more welcoming to all of us.

“That is something that we are incredibly grateful for because we are outsiders and to be made to feel like that is very special.”
