A PENSIONER has lost his licence following a crash which left his car on its roof.

Harry Block, of Maes Llan in Gwernaffield, appeared at Mold Magistrates Court on Thursday afternoon for sentence.

The 71-year-old had previously admitted that on June 24 at Gwernaffield, when suspected of having driven a vehicle and having been required to provide a specimen of blood, he failed to do so.

Justin Espie, prosecuting, told the court that on the day of the offence police were called to a crash in Mold after reports an Audi vehicle was on its roof and the driver was attempting to leave the scene.

He was heard to say "I need to get home," Mr Espie said - before being collected by another vehicle and leaving.

Police went to Block's home and attempted to obtain a sample from him, but were not able to.

Block was taken to hospital for his injuries, where he refused to give a sample.

In mitigation, the court heard Block - a retired painter and decorator - had been on his way home after collecting a takeaway for himself and his partner.

His vehicle had suffered, "as far as he is aware," a collapsed front suspension and it ran up a bank before crashing.

As a result of the incident the vehicle was written off.

It was said Block had concussion, whiplash and fractured ribs, and had been "confused" when police asked him for samples.

The incident had "taught him a lesson," the court heard.

Block was fined £120 and ordered to pay a surcharge of £48, as well as £85 costs.

He was also banned from driving for two years.
