A LAW firm has pledged to help clients to 'remember a charity' when drafting their Will.

More people are leaving a charitable gift in their Will than ever before, with the UK seeing a 30% rise in the proportion of people choosing to donate in this way over the past 20 years.

An increasingly popular way to give, 100 people across the UK now write a charitable gift into their Will each day, funding vital services across the country. However, when speaking with clients, the team at Allington Hughes Law find that lots of them are still unaware that they can give from their Will.

The firm, with offices in Wrexham, Chester and Llanrwst, has signed up to the national campaign, Remember A Charity, to build public understanding, making Will-writing clients aware that they have the option of donating from their Will, after making provisions for their family and friends.

Emma Jacobs, senior associate solicitor at Allington Hughes Law said: "We are thrilled to have pledged to support the 'Remember a Charity' campaign. Next month there is a push to drive people to be more aware across the week of September 5-11.

"We will be making sure all our clients are aware that it is always a good thing to include a donation in their will, no matter how large or small. People often feel deeply connected to the charities they support and find the idea of including a donation in their Will appealing. But there's a common misconception that this type of giving is reserved for the wealthy.

"In reality, people can give any amount - large or small - to any charity. It all makes a difference, and it can be such a rewarding thing to do.

"There are also generous tax breaks for those who donate from their Will, making it even more appealing for our client base."

Gifts in Wills are tax-free, effectively increasing the Inheritance Tax threshold on donors' estates. And for people that choose to donate 10% of their estate or more, this reduces the rate of Inheritance Tax down from 40% to 36%, which can amount to a considerable reduction on larger estates.

Allan Freeman, chair of Remember A Charity - a consortium of 200 UK charities, added: "Gifts in Wills have a phenomenal impact on charitable causes across the UK, whether that's a case of funding medical research or shelters for those suffering from abuse, mental health helplines or keeping local the theatre open. Particularly in recent times, that income has never been more important, helping charities to sustain and even increase services to help those in need.

"It's a great opportunity for people to have a lasting positive imprint, leaving the world a better place for future generations."
