A FLINTSHIRE pre-school has held a teddy bears picnic to raise money in honour of a child diagnosed with a rare condition.

Myles Tucker was born with 4H leukodystrophy – an incurable disease affecting just 120 babies in the world.

The life-threatening condition is mainly found in babies, with many tragically dying by their late teens. Three-year-old Myles has severe hearing loss, is unable to speak and faces difficulty walking – eventually, he will sadly lose all his mobility.

Myles attends St Winefrides for 2.5hours a day and is very popular in class, admired by staff, children, and parents.

St Winefrides Pre-school in Holywell decided to show their support for mum, Georgia who is raising awareness about 4H leukodystrophy by holding a teddy bears picnic for pupils. All children were encouraged to come to school in their pyjamas and bring in their favourite teddy bears.

The children read one of their favourite stories, “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ and proceeded to go on a hunt of their own after the bears were hidden by staff in St Winefrides’ eco garden, before enjoying ice lollies and yoghurts.

The St Winefrides’ Facebook page also held a raffle which contributed towards an incredible £809.50 raised so far which will go towards the Yaya Foundation which is working to find a cure for Myles' disease.

Louise Williams, manager of St Winefrides Pre-school said: “As a small setting, we pride ourselves on equal opportunities and inclusion; we were honoured when Georgia, Myles's mum, chose our setting to look after her precious little boy.

“Debs (Myles’ one-to-one support) has bonded with Myles since day one; their relationship is so special. I'm very lucky to have such wonderful staff here at St Winefrides. Myles absolutely lights our pre-school room with his infectious smile. We have watched Myles grow and achieve milestones over the past two years; we are so proud of his journey.

“In September, Myles will start his new adventure in Ysgol Pen Coch, an amazing school which he will absolutely love; however, preschool will undoubtedly miss him.  We wanted to support Georgia, who is on a mission to raise awareness about 4H leukodystrophy.”
