Boris Johnson quit as Conservative leader today, but how did Wrexham and Flintshire MPs react to the news?

The PM made an announcement to the nation outside of 10 Downing Street this afternoon, stating: "it was “clearly the will of the parliamentary Conservative Party that there should be a new leader."

The decision comes after months of speculation over 'Partygate' and yesterday Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid tendered their resignations.

Johnson will remain as Prime Minister until a new one is selected, with the Conservative Party voting on who they would like to lead them.

MP for Delyn, Rob Roberts said that the decision for Johnson to step down had become 'inevitable'

He said: "It had become inevitable. I had conversations with colleagues months ago to say that the facts about whether he did or didn’t do things had become almost irrelevant as the nature of the PM being in post had become too much of a distraction and a spanner in the works of the Government getting on with its work.

"The resignation of Boris Johnson had to happen, and I am hopeful that the Party can move forward swiftly to get a replacement in place. There is a lot to be getting on with and for my part, I’ll continue to try to do my best for the people of Delyn on a day-to-day basis away from the political comings and goings in Westminster."

Wrexham's MP Sarah Atherton admitted she too had 'serious concerns' over the conduct of colleagues in the commons, she said: "Being from a military background loyalty is very important. I have been a supporter of the PM thus far. He delivered Brexit, got the country through the pandemic, and has been steadfast in his support for Ukraine.

"However, over the weekend I had serious concerns about the conduct of the former Deputy Chief Whip, his admission, and how it was managed. This made the Prime Minister’s position untenable.

"For the last year, I have campaigned for rooting out inappropriate behaviours in the military and I believe that this should apply to all walks of life. The PM has done the right thing by resigning and I will continue to concentrate on serving Wrexham."

Simon Baynes, MP for Clwyd South was sad to see Boris Johnson step down, saying: "I am very sorry about the resignation of the Prime Minister as I am a strong supporter of his and consider that he has achieved a great deal for our country, particularly in getting Brexit done, the highly successful Covid vaccine rollout and his outstanding international leadership on the war in Ukraine.

"We will now have a leadership election campaign in the Conservative Party which I am sure will be conducted rapidly and in a constructive and courteous fashion. I wish the Prime Minister and his family all the very best for the future and thank him from the bottom of my heart for all that he has done for Wales and the rest of the United Kingdom."
