A HOUSING and land developer is looking to build over 400 new homes in Wrexham.

Harworth Group has announced plans to build 425 homes on land near the Erlas Victorian Walled Garden - 86 (20 per cent) of which would be affordable housing.

The site is situated to the east of Cefn Road and south of Bryn Estyn Road.

Harworth Group has said the Erlas Park scheme would create up to 130 jobs during construction, including apprenticeship opportunities. This is as well as 120 jobs via the local supply chain.

The company also claims the development would deliver highway improvements to the A534 / A5156 roundabout, and would "lay the ground work" for a new link road between Cefn Road and Holt Road / A5156 roundabout. The scheme would also generate additional local expenditure of over £3million a year.

Ahead of submitting a formal planning application to Wrexham County Borough Council, Harworth Group has launched a public consultation to hear the views of local people on the proposals.

The company has said the scheme will deliver "much needed" new homes, that would be built in an "exemplary designed scheme" that will "complement and enhance" the local area.

However, the plans have already been met with voices of opposition from local people.

After the details of the plans were shared on a local community group on Facebook, dozens of people voiced their concerns.

One person said: "This is horrendous in my opinion. Travelling down Cefn Road of a morning is already a nightmare with all the traffic, and all that lovely green space lost."

Another added: "Only the developers will benefit. What about protecting wildlife and green spaces? Why can't we let things be? Why do we have to peruse growth and profit at all costs?

"This is why we have a "Climate Emergency". Anyone else remember the council announcing that same emergency?"

A further comment said: "Schools, doctors, hospitals can’t cope now, plus more traffic on the roads, too."
