A FUNDRAISING page set up to help buy CCTV cameras for a Flintshire primary school struck by vandals has collected over £1,000.

On Thursday May 5, Ysgol Derwenfa in Leeswood, had its outdoor area vandalised, reportedly by a gang of youths.

The vandals destroyed the Early Years area, breaking items such as tables and chairs which are no longer fixable.

They are also said to have damaged the school roof from climbing up and damaging the tiles.

Ysgol Derwenfa Heateacher Andrew Jones said that all involved at the school had been left 'absolutely disgusted' by the incident.

Since the vandalism took place however, a fundraising page has been set up to help the school recover from the damage.

Set up by Suzanne Dorricott of the Friends Of The School at Ysgol Derwenfa, the page has so far collected £1,360 (correct at time of writing).

The funds will be used to have CCTV installed and hopefully replace any equipment that has been broken.

Suzanne said: "When school opened for the children on Friday (May 6), all the children and staff were left devastated to find someone had been to the school the night before and vandalised the equipment.

The Leader:

PIC: Damage done to Ysgol Derwenfa's play area.

"These were learning resources for little children and now they have nothing as they have been selfishly taken away from them and destroyed.

"The school is desperate for CCTV to be installed but unfortunately the only way this can happen is to go through the right contacts with the council. This then costs thousands of pounds.

"As a small school, we physically do not have the funds to pay for this so we are asking for the generosity of the public to make this happen."

Suzanne added that this was 'not the first time' the school has been vandalised but added that it was 'massively important that we put a stop to it now'.
