A group of young students from the Holywell high school were excited to attend a popular outdoors activity centre for a day of adventure and team building activities to help build confidence and resilience.

The trip to the Kingswood Centre, Colomendy, was organised by Ysgol Treffynnon to give Year 7 students an opportunity to leave the classroom behind and have some fun after the restrictions of the last couple of years.

Working in groups, the children participated in four activities: climbing, an obstacle challenge, Jacob's ladder (a tall climbing structure) and buggy building, all led by dedicated activity leaders.

Taylor Burns, teacher of geography, had the idea of running the trip to the Kingswood Centre.

She said: "Many students have not been away from home due to the pandemic, and I wanted to give them a chance to relax and have fun while boosting their resilience. I was delighted with the response when we sent the letter out to parents and carers, which meant we were able to take 110 students on the trip.

"The students thoroughly enjoyed the different activities, particularly the Jacobs ladder, and loved being able to ride the buggies they had built. It was great to see their smiling faces and to hear their excited chatter as they worked together to complete each activity.

"I have since received lots of positive feedback from them and they are asking to do things like this more often, even suggesting where we could go on future trips! This has been a hugely positive and rewarding experience for the students who have benefitted both educationally and socially. I would like to thank parents and carers for their support."

The Wrexham school recently took part in a girls' seven-a-side tournament at the Cefn Druids FC ground, The Rock.

The tournament was open to local secondary schools and was organised by Active Wrexham with support from Cefn Druids.

Ysgol Rhiwabon sent mixed Year 7 and 8, and Year 9 and 10 teams to take part.

It was a fantastic day enabling pupils to really push themselves and demonstrate good resilience against some tough opposition.

All year groups conducted themselves brilliantly and represented the school extremely well.

Pupils at Ysgol Sychdyn put their 'From Crime to Courtroom: Enviro crime' training into action.

Following training from Natural Resources Wales (NRW), Year 3 teacher Megan Hughes, decided to put the 'From Crime to Courtroom: Enviro crime' training to life.

Using the Mantle Approach, pupils at the Flintshire school received a phone call from a concerned local who had witnessed someone fly-tipping. Having gone out to investigate, pupils found some black bin bags had been dumped in their school grounds!

Assuming the role of NRW environment officers, pupils used a range of numeracy skills to explain the location of the bin bags, record the weather and wind conditions and the distance of the bags to the school's watercourse.

The pH and ammonia levels of the water were tested to see whether the water had been impacted by the "hazardous materials" and pupils explored how long the waste would take to break down if left in-situ.

After investigating the contents of the bags and sorting them in a tally chart, pupils were assigned different roles to bring the case to court. Finally, pupils reflected on their learning by linking each activity to the Four Core Purposes and by recording a 'Fly-tipping Vlog!'

Throughout the week, there was an abundance of learning experiences that really brought the experience to life for pupils.

Megan said: "By fluke, we met a member of Flintshire Street Scene who was collecting litter outside our school. He explained the impacts of fly-tipping and just how big this problem is.

"We emailed an environment officer based in New Zealand, who explained the processes he undertakes in preventing fly-tipping and offered some wonderful advice to us, adding - 'We have a job to make sure that we leave the planet in better condition than it was when we were born'.

"Finally, a police officer from Flintshire visited our classroom to collect evidence ready to take the suspect to court!

"The children absolutely loved the work we did on 'From Crime to Courtroom' and there has been a real buzz in our school as a result. The feedback I received from pupils, staff and parents was invaluable."

Pupils at Eyton Primary School enjoyed a mobile stardome.

The children at the school were given a very special surprise before heading into the Easter Holidays. After a term studying the solar system, the school hired a mobile stardome from Xplore! in Wrexham - a large inflatable structure that you step inside that gives the experience of being in space!

This was such a fantastic treat for the children and also coincided with their ‘reading rockets’ project, where the more the children read, the further their rockets move along a timeline. With thanks to Xplore! Wrexham and the teachers and staff at the school who organised the event, it brought such joy, excitement and wonder to the children.

The school is so proud that after entering the Urdd recitals this year, for the first time in many years, their group recital and individual poems will be going through to the finals in Denbigh in May.

The children performed brilliantly and are really looking forward to the competition. They have also entered a number of fabulous art pieces and look forward to hearing if they have been successful in this area too.

In the run up to Ester, the nursery and reception classes went all out and treated the whole school to an Easter Bonnet Parade! It was a delight to watch and to hear the youngsters singing Chick, chick chicken through the corridors.

In other classes, the children took part in a variety of Easter activities, including making delicious hot cross buns from scratch, creating Easter cards and art, treasure hunts and egg hunts - with literacy and numeracy tied in of course. Not forgetting learning the importance of the Easter story to Christians and the lessons we can all learn from it.
