Youngsters at the Flintshire primary school have been collecting books to send to a school in South Africa.

So far there are about 200 books ready to be sent to the Siyaphambili School in Cape Town.

Teacher Anna Lindsay said: "Since about February, pupils and staff have been donating children's books.

"We now have quite a few boxes of boxes. It's been a really nice response.

"I had been talking to our caretaker about the possibility and he's actually from South Africa.

"His sister lives there and does charity work, including helping to build a school for children would otherwise have no education.

"There are currently no educational resources for the school, no books.

"After speaking her her, I suggested we could send some books, notepads and pens.

"It's been really nice explaining it to the children. Letting them know it's for children who don't have as much as we do."

It's hoped the books will be headed to South Africa in the next few weeks.

The children and staff of the Dee Valley Federation have been working hard over recent weeks, creating pieces of work for their yearly Federation Eisteddfod.

Made up of Froncysyllte CP School, Ysgol y Garth and Ysgol Pentre, the schools come together each year to celebrate the Patron Saint of Wales, Saint David.

Similar to last year due to restrictions, the three schools met online through a virtual meeting to share their love of Wales.

Categories this year included Welsh art, poetry, recitations and biographical writing. After the success of last year, the school also brought back a home category named Bake Off Cymru, where children put their chef hats on and made some excellent bakes.

Children dressed up in Welsh costumes and waved the Welsh flag whilst singing the national anthem, in an enjoyable afternoon celebrating Welsh culture.

The standards of work were very high, so judges are going to have tough decisions to make.

Headteacher of the Dee Valley Federation said: "It was pleasure and a privilege to a part of our Federation Eisteddfod, my first one as headteacher.

"All of the pupils impressed me so much with the high standard of work and excellent Welsh pronunciation.

"It was lovely to see how the whole federation came to support and encourage each other.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff for all of their hard work in preparing the children, parents and carers for organising Welsh themed clothing as the children looked amazing.

"Finally a huge thank you to Miss Danielle Weigh for organising and leading the event."

The playgroup took part in last week's World Book Day celebrations.

The children at Busy Bees wore dressing up outfits of their favourite character out of their favourite book.

Each child received a new book to take away, so they can continue to read at home with family.

They also played word lotto, letter matching games and puzzle solving games on the day.

Some children read a story of their choice and used story puppet sacks to enhance the tale.

Parents and the community were thanked for their continued support, care and generosity.

And the school hopes they can help ease the suffering of those families in a small way.

Last week pupils from Year 5 and Year 6 were out in the community working with the ranger at local park, Dee Park near the Shotton Railway station.

The children were keen to spend time out of the classroom after not being able to go on class trips.

They had a very enjoyable day helping the rangers with their task of planting more than 5,000 trees, and were all extremely proud of themselves.

The youngsters are looking forward to helping out again in the near future.
