Children and staff at the Flintshire primary school, took part in a Rudolph Run fundraiser before Christmas.

The festive event was on behalf of Nightingale House Hospice, and the school raised £2694.80.

Not only was this a school record but it was the most raised by a school for this event, which saw other schools take part across the region.

It was a great achievement, and the school thanks the children and parents for their support.

A Mold high school student really has something to sing about.

Isobel Owen, from Ysgol Maes Garmon, is this year's recipient of the Lynne Davies Memorial Cup.

The cup is an annual bestowed honour for the most promising soprano and was donated by Gwyndaf Davies in memory of his daughter Lynne, an opera singer from Cilcain who had performed at Glyndebourne and as far afield as Dubai.

Not only has Isobel been a faithful member of the choir and orchestra at Ysgol Maes Garmon since Year 7, she is also a choir and orchestra member at county level, as well as at national level.

Deputy headteacher Nia Wyn Jones said: "Isobel is such a dedicated musician with the most brilliant of soprano voices.

"She as long since been the backbone of our school choir and I'm delighted that we've been given the opportunity to celebrate her talent, especially as the pandemic affected music performances over the last two years.

Energetic pupils have participated in a major challenge.

Back in October 2021, pupils in Year 5 and 6 of Ysgol Y Garth started a sponsored cycle challenge using an exercise bike.

Their challenge was to cycle 6,707km - across the width of Africa - before Christmas. This was to coincide with their African topic.

The pupils at the Llangollen school each took turns throughout the day to clock up the miles, and even continued the challenge at home!

Over the weeks, the pupils decided to increase their daily kilometres by walking and running around the playground.

This would ensure that they could hit their targets each week, and be able to reach their goal by Christmas.

The pupils worked tirelessly and completed the challenge on time.

All of the funds that the pupils raised have been split between school funds and the Barnardo’s charity in Llangollen.

Julie Burke, from Barnardo’s, told pupils: “Your donation is very much appreciated and very important to us as we cannot help our vulnerable children without your kind and generous donations.”

Headteacher Nathan Williams added: “What an incredible achievement by the pupils of Ysgol Y Garth to complete such a challenge.

“All the pupils should be extremely proud of themselves.”

Staff at the school say a huge well done to all of the pupils who took part, for being totally committed and for achieving this fantastic result.
