PLANS have been formally submitted for a new Lidl supermarket in Connah's Quay.

Earlier this week, a planning application was submitted to Flintshire Council by the German chain to build a new supermarket store at the site of the former Somerfield on the High Street.

The supermarket chain revealed in November its desire to build a new store in Connah’s Quay.

Lidl has expressed interest in having a store in Connah's Quay for a number of years, and the old Somerfield site - which has been derelict for nine years - has been deemed the perfect fit.

The plans are to relocate its supermarket on Deeside Retail Park in Queensferry - with the former store being marketed for use by another retailer.

The store will require up to 40 members of staff (25 full time equivalent) in order to operate in the most efficient manner. All 15 existing members of staff will transfer to the replacement store on its opening. The new jobs created by the proposal will comprise both full and part-time roles, with part-time hours ranging from 9 – 36 hours.

The supermarket chain launched a public consultation on its draft proposals in November - and found the vast majority of local residents very much in support of the plans.

Flintshire Council has already shown support for the proposal - which will be decided on by its planning committee at a later date.

The new store would include bakery, customer toilets and longer-style tills.
