A DEESIDE football club has thrown its support behind a campaign to support the families of the victims of the Hillsborough disaster.

The tragedy took place during an FA Cup semi-final clash between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest at Sheffield Wednesday's Hillsborough ground on April 15, 1989.

Now, a campaign, formed by the families and survivors, is calling for changes to the legal system to prevent the blocks to and miscarriages of justice the close families of the 97 have, and continue to face.

On January 13, Connah's Quay Nomads FC announced its support for the Hillsborough Law Now movement.

This law proposes to compel all public officials to be truthful at inquiries into public tragedies or disaster situations, while also offering bereaved families better access to financial resources for legal representation at inquests.

The movement is being supported by leading political figures Mayor Steve Rotheram of the Liverpool City Region, Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, as well as Connah's Quay-based politicians Jack Sargeant, MS for Alyn and Deeside, and North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner Andy Dunbobbin.

Jack Sargeant, an ambassador for The Nomads, said: "I welcome the Nomads' decision to support this campaign and the families of the 97. It feels right that they are the first Welsh club to do so because of the strong bonds between our communities and Liverpool. Never again should anyone face the barriers the families of the 97 have faced and continue to face in their quest for justice.

"The scales of justice are tipped against ordinary people in this country and that is wrong. There should be a duty on public bodies and public servants to reveal what they know and tell the full truth. Likewise, justice should not be based upon how deep your pockets are and I fully support the call for better access for financial support."

With Connah's Quay among the many communities directly impacted by the Hillsborough tragedy, Connah's Quay Nomads say they 'pledge to stand in solidarity' with the families who lost their loved ones at or as a result of the tragic events of that day in 1989.
