A CRAFT group has appealed for donations of wool for a community art project.

Craft Connect Wrexham is a drop-in craft group that meets once a week to help support people in the community who are suffering from anxiety or people who need a break.

They run a community art project every three months but also encourage people to bring their own projects to the group.

Their last community art project was pompoms, which were used to decorate the Yellow and Blue hub on Henblas Street over Christmas, where the group meets every Tuesday from 1pm-2.30pm.

The Leader: The pompoms that the group made The pompoms that the group made

Sophia Leadill, a community artist, set up Craft Connect CIC five months ago. She suffers with anxiety and agoraphobia herself, and said when she looked around, she couldn’t find a safe space that she needed so she decided, if it doesn’t exist, make it.

She said: “We have people who come on their own, people who come with support workers or carers, and we have staff from other organisations who come in with people that they work with. We have people in temporary accommodation who come in, and working and stay at home parents who come in for some time to themselves. It’s a real mix.”

As a new community interest company it's early days for Craft Connect Wrexham, and Sophia currently volunteers her time.

She explained: “It’s early days, and we are applying for funding for various things but we don’t have much of that at the moment so rather than buying materials out of my own pocket which I couldn’t really afford to do I just thought I’d put a shout out on social media because people tend to want to help out, especially if it's from Yellow and Blue because they know it’s got a community focus.

“The response so far has been incredible. We’ve had people getting in touch saying that they’ve got bin bags full of wool for us. But we will need more.”

She added: “I don’t know how it works, or why it works but it does, people go away feeling better than when they came in. It is really simple but sometimes the most beautiful things are.”

Sophia thanks Yellow and Blue for their support with the group and the community for the donations and support.

They ask that any wool donations go to Yellow and Blue.
